This ukulele is dedicated to my Hawaiian friends and mentors and the composers. To many to possibly remember but especially Peter Moon, Larry Ramos and Mana Keale, Raymond Kane, Martin Pahinui and Roland Cazimero. Mahalo for the greatest gift a luthier can ever to hope to receive, thank you for giving me your sound.
This uke is made of ancient Koa of Kauai, top, back, sides and neck, air seasoned for a minimum of 10 years and assembled in a 50% relative humidity shop. The fingerboard is ebony, bridge is Kiawe, nut and saddle are bone, inlays are mother of pearl and paua. Tuning machines are gold Gotoh. Neck width at nut is 1.5 in.
The design is based on a Martin tenor. The waist has been narrowed, the lower bout widened, the depth of the body deepened, and a doming added to the top and back, with the bracing carved to conform to the doming. The neck is slightly set back while still allowing for the correct geometry of bridge height, playing action and future choice of playing styles necessary for maximum sound production.
The top and back are graduated, as a violin, adding great depth of response and string to string balance to the already huge rich sound of the Koa. The ebony finger board is radiused and fretted with stainless steel, for increased playability, comfort and wear.
This double hole Taro Leaf tenor was designed to honor Haloa, the first born, and the Aina. The double sound hole opens the uke for the player to experience an added dimension of sound and an overall increase in the dynamic range and response of the instrument. The instrument has an overall huge sound.
Especially appreciated by those composing or recording, an ukulele they can't walk by without "picking" up.
